End of summer boredom

We’ve entered the second half of August, that time of year where the days are slow and seep into each other where you can’t tell what day or time it is. The end of summer is near, but not quite here yet. This morning the garden is wet from the first rain we’ve had in weeks. Some may love these days, others may be sad that summer is slowly coming to an end. To me, this time of the year always moves a little too slow and I’m aching for the seasons to change.

This September I will be going back to school for the first time in years and it’s funny that this August reminds me of the summer holidays I had back in my school and uni days. I was always excited to start the new school year, to see my classmates, to start new courses, to use my brand new school supplies, to show off my carefully thought out back-to-school outfits. The final weeks of summer were all about preparation, but could also get incredibly boring. This is what I’m experiencing again now. I have a new laptop, a very pretty notebook I bought in Paris, new pens and the mandatory reading material for my course, all ready to get started. But in reality it’s still three and a half weeks until my first class and I don’t really know what to do with myself until then. I have been thinking about what to wear to my first class. What will the other students be like? I’m very aware that most students will probably be a lot younger than me, around 18, 19 years old. I want to look cool when I come to class, but maybe like a cool auntie and not like a mom. I’ll probably get back to this some other time.

It’s not just starting uni again that makes these last summer days so slow. It’s also the change of the seasons. I’ve never really been a summer person. It seems to me summer is the season for extraverted people. It’s when you’re supposed to go out to the beach or the park and have picnics and barbecues. You’re supposed to have drinks on the terrace and stay out late because it doesn’t get dark until eleven. And then there’s me. I’m the person who prefers to have her food indoors, because I’m scared to attract wasps and I hate to have to reapply my sunscreen every thirty minutes. I find barbecuing inconvenient and don’t like how it makes my clothes smell like smoke. I’m not particularly fond of the beach in summer, the combination of sand, sweat and sunscreen make me feel gross and it’s much too crowded with people who have little consideration for others. Summer is loud and kind of obnoxious. I can’t wait for autumn to start.
